How did you first find out about the Hotelier Awards and what was your experience like with the platform?
I first heard about the Hotelier Awards during the second year of the Rosewood Beijing hotel opening. I think the Awards is like the Oscars for hoteliers, it provides an opportunity for hotel management to recognise their team members, not only at a managerial level, but throughout all departments and all levels. The initial selection process is rigorous, starting with an application and then an interview for the finalists; all of which is chosen by a professional judging panel. The gala dinner in December is a wonderful event for hoteliers to meet and celebrate the achievements.
After being crowned the Human Resources Hotelier of the Year in 2016, how have you leveraged the opportunity to inspire and motivate those that are working with you?
I am so proud to be the first winner from Rosewood, especially as we are a new brand in Asia, it encourages the team to keep driving forward and I am sure there will be more winners to come from our properties in the future. There are a lot of service or quality related awards, for example, restaurant awards and hotel magazine recognitions, but there aren’t many awards given to recognising the individuals across different departments. It is therefore a big motivation for hotels to put themselves forward and support their team members, including those unsung heroes and people behind the scenes.
3. We recently announced the finalists for this year, can you share some tips with them for the next stage of judging – the phone interviews?
My main tip would be to ‘relax and be yourself!’, especially for those hoteliers who do not have much experience with interviews and may feel nervous. There is nothing to be worried about, it’s just like sharing your experience and career journey from the last twelve months. My interviewer also came from a hotel background, so it’s like chatting with a friend who shares the same passion as you do. Having said that, the telephone conversation lasts for around 30 minutes, so it may not be possible to summarise everything you have done in past year, instead just focus on the highlights and how you make a difference.
